Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un Surely we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.
Salman Shinwari, age 17, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away on May 21, 2025, surrounded by loved ones after a tragic car accident. Born in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, Salman moved to the United States with his family in 2017 and proudly became a U.S. citizen in June 2023.
A sophomore at Manhattan High School, Salman was a bright student, a devoted son and brother, and a talented athlete. He played football, cricket, and in each with quiet determination and a spirit of teamwork that made him beloved by his teammates and coaches.
Salman was wise beyond his years. He provided strength and support to his family, mentored younger students, and offered kindness and comfort to many adults in the community. With a sharp entrepreneurial mind, Salman often spoke of his dream to open an Afghan-owned business- one that would reflect his roots and serve his new home in Kansas. He was already preparing for that future, driven by hope and vision.
He bridged cultures with grace and dignity, honoring his Afghan identity while embracing the values and opportunities of American life. He was known for his gentle smile, generous heart, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved.
Salman is survived by his loving parents, Matiullah and Zainab Shinwari; his sisters, Fawzia and Amina; and his brothers, Rehan, Zaid, and Hussam. He is deeply mourned by his extended family, friends, classmates, teachers, coaches, and the entire Manhattan and Afghan communities.
A memorial ceremony will be held at the Islamic Center of Manhattan, and burial will take place at the Mid-America Muslim Cemetery in Kansas City. Further details will be shared by the family.
In honor of Salman's memory, may we live with the compassion, strength, and dreams that defined his life. Though his time was brief, his legacy is lasting and his light will continue to shine in all those who knew and loved him.
