Mellie Thornburrow
Mellie was born on February 23, 1930 in Horton, Kansas to Clarence and Ethel Craig. She lived a life full of love, family, friendships, and joy.
On September 3, 1950, Mellie married Bill Thornburrow. They built a life centered around family and memories. Throughout the years, Mellie embraced the role she treasured most - that of being a mother. She often told her family, "All I ever wanted was to be a Mom," and she lived those words every day.
To many people in Manhattan, Mellie was known by her familiar face and smile, working at the bakery in the 'old' Dillons store. She enjoyed her fellow coworkers and the many bakery 'regulars'.
Family was always the center of Mellie's world. She loved entertaining and had a gift for making everyone feel welcomed. She opened her heart and home to family, friends, and neighbors. To many she became a second 'Mom', remembered for her boundless energy, generous spirit, and love of life.
One of Mellie's greatest joys was spending time outdoors with her family. Her Mother's Day request was always to spend it together fishing.
Mellie was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, and her sons Mark and Jerry.
She is lovingly remembered by her children and grandchildren: David and his wife Kim, and their children Matt and Amy; Rhonda and her son Mitch; Carol and her daughter Haley; and Kay and her husband David Rau, and their children Carson, Kendra and Matt.
As Mellie's niece shared, "She was a genuine bright light in life." Those who knew her experienced that light through her warmth, generosity, spirit, and love. Her legacy lives on through the family she cherished, the friendships she made, and the lives she touched throughout her 96 years.
A private family burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mellie's memory may be made to 'The Good Shepherd Hospice House'.
